In the Monteverde region, we have protected over 55 ha (136 Acres) of land in four Ecological-Wildlife Refuges.
La Calandria is a 27 HA (67 acres) wildlife refuge with a lodge for students, researchers, and other visitors that want to stay in a protected reserve. Protected by our collaborator, the Mallory Family, we have restored the forest on almost the entire property. The lodge is dedicated to habitat protection, restoration, education, and research. Our 18,000 tree nursery is located on this property and grows species for elevations that range from 1800m to the Gulf of Nicoya at sea level.

Refugio Ecológico Finca Rodriguez is 11 ha (27 acres) of forest and restored forest. Once a coffee plantation and working farm of the Rodriguez family, this reserve now hosts a wealth of wildlife. The old forest in the center of the refuge is now surrounded by. planted patches that range from newly planted to 17 years of age.

Refugio Ecologico Nacimiento y Vida protects both restored forest and riparian hábitat. We have also granted a concession to the local water company for community’ use of our spring that release 28 liters of water per minute. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife provided grants to restore habitat for neotropical migratory birds. In October, 2023, our research encountered more migratory birds utilizing this habitat than resident birds!

The Crandell Reserve is named after Rachel and Dwight Crandell who were dedicated to conservation in the zone. Their purchase of this land and donation of half of the reserve resulted in joint ownership by. the FCC and the Monteverde Institute, While all of our protected areas are open to the public, the location of this reserve near the center of Monteverde provides a forest respite for many locals and visitors alike.
